Laser Applications Development Engineer

Job Description
This key role is within a state-of-the-art engineering facility at the forefront of laser innovation, offering the chance to work on cutting-edge projects that are revolutionising the industry. This role suits an experienced or senior engineer ready to take on technical challenges, contribute to pioneering developments, and help shape next-generation laser technologies, with strong opportunities for professional growth and career progression.

As a Laser Applications Development Engineer, you will develop and optimise advanced laser micromachining processes, with a particular focus on glass and photonic components. You will work with ultrafast laser systems, helping to develop innovative solutions for emerging applications across advanced manufacturing and electronics.

The role involves hands-on experimentation, testing, and validating laser processes; integrating prototype systems; and troubleshooting technical challenges. You will also work with optical components, motion control, instrumentation and software to improve system performance and develop next-generation laser technologies.

You will have a degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, Laser Engineering or a related discipline, alongside practical experience with femtosecond lasers and laser micromachining. Experience processing glass is particularly relevant, while knowledge of other materials, optical systems, Python, MATLAB or C++ would be advantageous.

This role suits a proactive engineer or scientist who enjoys solving complex problems and contributing to innovative projects. Candidates with relevant practical research experience gained through a degree, MSc or PhD may also be considered.

Requirements:
  • Degree in Laser Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Practical experience and knowledge of ultrafast laser technologies, particularly femtosecond lasers.
  • Hands-on experience in laser micromachining, ideally involving glass processing.
